Murmurations is a collaborative, interdisciplinary anthology of essays, poetry, photography and visual writing that arose in response to a challenge: to put ideas into the world, through forms inspired by the murmurations of starlings. In editing and designing this book I aimed to integrate the variety of projects to reflect the way our shared goals, language, and challenges surfaced in our work. This process influenced my connected projects, (Salt) Evasion Patterns and Notes on Starlings, which are threaded through the book along with photographs from the Halophilic 4 series. Crystal formations are temporary states. The way that pieces grow and adhere to each other, their size, surfaces, angles, degree of clarity--all the qualities that we see reflect the conditions that formed them to that point. This series shows a set that had been exposed to a solution that was less concentrated than the one they had come from, which caused them to immediately start dissolving.
Dissolution is the first book from my ongoing series of photographs of salt crystals. It was originally available in a limited special edition, with folder and a 6” archival inkjet print. The special edition sold out, but the book is still available. See shop to order.
